Part learning companion, part magic wand, Hot Dots® is an interactive, engaging way to help children as young as three learn about maths at home. Hot Dots is a talking, laughing, light-up pen pal that buzzes with excitement as children explore the Hot Dots maths activity cards and books (read more here about how to use Hot Dots to support learning phonics at home.) Here’s how to use Hot Dots to learn maths.
This self-checking system provides instant feedback and encourages independent, self-paced learning through positive re-enforcement and gentle nudging. The chunky design of the pen is ideal for little hands to grip and hold.
How it works:
To get started, choose from the Original Talking Hot Dots Pen or Hot Dots Jr. Ace the Talking, Teaching Dog® Pen. Your child then uses their pen to work through the multiple-choice activity maths cards.
When your child uses the Hot Dots pen to touch the correct answer on the activity card, it instantly lights up with a green light and cheers for the correct answer. When it touches the incorrect answer, the pen glows red and provides gentle redirection, which encourages independent discovery and learning.
Suitable for children aged 3-7, Hot Dots Jr. Numbers & Counting Card Set is a fun way to practise counting, number recognition, number words, and sequencing. The set contains 36 brightly coloured cards that add up to 72 early learning activities. Cards store in the handy carry case so it’s easy to get the cards out at home when it’s maths time (please note the Hot Dots Talking Pen is sold separately).
Hot Dots Let’s Learn! Maths Set is aimed at children aged 5-9 and includes an Original Talking Hot Dots Pen, and three activity books that teach:
- Addition (facts 0-10)
- Subtraction (facts 0-10 and some for 11-15)
- Telling time to the hour, half-hour, quarter-hour and five-minute increments
Each book includes 64 activities on 32 double-sided pages. Books are spiral bound to make learning easier.

Demonstrate how the pen works when getting started – although kids soon get the hang of it. Pens can also be set to an audio setting or to fun sound effects – or both for extra reinforcement. And the activity cards and books can be used as flashcards, too.
