Getting your 5 a day

This time of year is great for exploring what fruit and vegetables are around, either produced locally or rife in supermarkets. The upcoming summer holidays will see many families out picking their own fruits and veggies in the local fields or at home in the back garden!

The NHS are keen for us all to get at least five pieces of fruit and veg in everyday, there are adverts on TV about it all the time! Unfortunately it’s not always as easy as it seems to get children (or adults!) to eat the recommended five portions, as some are picky about them or just won’t touch them full stop! read more

Gender segregation of toys – The Debate!

A hot topic of discussion in the media at the moment is the ongoing debate regarding gendered toys for children. Just last week Minister for Women, Jenny Willcott appeared on ITV’s breakfast news show ‘Good Morning Britain’ discussing the impact gender segregated clothes, toys and resources have on children, their self-identity and even their future career prospects.

The benefits of outside learning

My daughter ‘Squirt’ loves being outside, she’ll happily play for hours in the garden, at the beach, and she loves nothing more than a play park! She enjoys it so much; it’s easy to sneak in some fun learning activities without her even noticing she’s learning!

We all know the benefits of being outside; fresh air, exercise, vitamin D and the boosts to children’s immunity, needless to say how much extra space there is out there! Whether it’s the school playground or at home in your back garden, the activity ideas and resources are endless! My niece particularly enjoys the ‘jumpoline’ (trampoline!) and we can see her coordination and balance have already improved. read more

Enjoy picnics come rain or shine!

We’re well and truly into picnic season now, and I hope you’ve got some fab picnics coming up! Let’s hope the weather is on our side, and we’re not faced with too many rainy days this summer. I remember inside picnics when I was little, my mum would set a blanket out on the living room floor, and we’d have lots of various snacks in little wicker baskets! It was just as much fun as an outside picnic, however we weren’t allowed to play with the frisbee for some reason!

I’m sure you’d all agree that an outside picnic is far more exciting than an inside one (frisbee or no frisbee), but in case we do have to dodge the showers this summer, have a look at our New Sprouts Picnic Set. The set includes everything needed to have a great inside picnic, including squirting ketchup and mustard bottles (my favourite bit!) and slices of watermelon. read more

I’m having a mental block!

We’ve been getting our brains working in the Learning Resources office this week, challenging each other to a go at the Mental Blox challenge! This critical thinking challenge game contains activity cards to promote strategic thinking and memory skills, as players re-create the image on the card (to be kept out of sight – no cheating!!) This challenge is certainly not as easy as it looks! Were those stripes horizontal or vertical? Was it purple on green or green on purple?
